Warszawa jest największym polskim miastem pod względem liczby ludności (1 753 977 mieszkańców, stan na 1 stycznia 2017)[1] i powierzchni (517,24 km² łącznie z Wisłą)[1].
Jest jedynym polskim miastem, którego ustrój jest określony odrębną ustawą. Od 2002 Warszawa jest gminą miejską mającą status miasta na prawach powiatu[3]. W jej skład wchodzi 18 jednostek pomocniczych – dzielnic m.st. Warszawy[4].
Warszawa jest ważnym ośrodkiem naukowym, kulturalnym, politycznym oraz gospodarczym. Tutaj znajdują się siedziby m.in. Prezydenta, Sejmu i Senatu, Rady Ministrów oraz Narodowego Banku Polskiego. Warszawa jest także siedzibą agencji Frontex odpowiedzialnej za bezpieczeństwo granic zewnętrznych Unii Europejskiej oraz Biura Instytucji Demokratycznych i Praw Człowieka (ODIHR), agendy OBWE.
Warszawa jest drugim (po Lwowie) polskim miastem wyróżnionym Krzyżem Srebrnym Orderu Wojennego Virtuti Militari. Została także wyróżniona Orderem Krzyża Grunwaldu I klasy[5], Krzyżem Niepodległości z mieczami[6] i Warszawskim Krzyżem Powstańczym[7].
W 2010 think tank Globalization and World Cities (GaWC), badający wzajemne stosunki pomiędzy miastami świata w kontekście globalizacji, uznał Warszawę za metropolię globalną (Alpha-)[8]. W 2016 ocena ta została podwyższona do Alpha[9]" – Wikipedia
