Challenging Map: Advice for beginners and the traffic-challenged

Because of the challenge level of this map, we designed in some elements to make sure the map is successfully playable as a map for large cities. While Czardus will be choosing a more challenging 2nd square, if you are not confident in managing traffic, I recommend the neighboring square with an interstate as the first expansion of your city limits(see images above to find it). The interstate intersection for that square is a low volume exit like you would find for many small town exits, so that in itself will still mean that the map is challenging even if you follow my suggested expansion strategy.

The map’s start square is laid out to simulate the natural growth of a town in the Midwest of the United States. The two lane highways that go through the start square simulate the historic US highways, the system that pre-dates the construction of the 1950s Eisenhower interstate highway system. A railroad also runs through the start square. Water supply is significant. Place your fresh water intake at the furthest upstream part of the start square, and place your sewage outflow at the downstream location. There are large water spawns that will provide worry-free sewage and fresh water separation.

Topography Design

The map started out as a real heightmap for Rock Island, Tennessee. While the unusual river layout and some higher areas were preserved, much of the rest of the map has been worked over to more closely resemble the meandering Illinois River as it passes by Starved Rock State Park, IL. This topography is typically meandering rivers with islands and oxbow lakes, with small cliff sides rising from the area that has been carved out by the rivers. Thus, features like river islands and lakes were added. The bridges across the river usually runs from cliff top to cliff top on the other side, so this is also reflected in this map’s design.
