Description:

The Tree

Douglas Firs (Pseudotsuga Menziesii) are tall, slender conifers native to the American West and cultivated worldwide. These adaptable pioneer trees take root in a variety of biomes. They serve as the backbone of ecosystems and logging industries alike.

The diversity of Dougs allows them to resemble a variety of other tree species, resulting in several confusing names. Indeed, Douglas Firs aren’t true firs, but rather a unique member of the pine family.

Introduction

This is a pack of 22 unique assets including 15 living and 7 dead trees.

Holy cow these were a journey. I started these using the same modeling techniques as my Western Hemlocks and Redcedars, but I didn’t feel like they lived up to my expectations; so I came up with a new modeling technique and started over from scratch. I put a lot of research into making these my most authentic trees.

I have more Douglas Fir packs planned for the future, including a pack of ancient Dougs that ascend to pre-colonial heights. This pack includes more typical examples.

Having done these, I feel like my Hemlocks and Redcedars no longer live up to my standards and I hope to redo those as well when I can.

Placement

Douglas Firs can be found along the Pacific Coast from Canada to Mexico, with smaller stands growing as far east as Colorado and Utah. Younger Dougs also appear in many other temperate climates where they’ve been cultivated.

These hardy trees often act as pioneers, rapidly growing to canopy height after major disruptions like large fires. Only later do other shade tolerant trees fill the canopy gaps. Therefor, Dougs are typically the tallest trees in a given stand.

Taking centuries to reach full maturity, the tallest Dougs should only appear in pre-colonial old growth forests.

Technical

– All 22 trees in the pack share two 1k x 2k texture sets. The Loading Screen Mod should eliminate the vast majority of functional RAM requirement for this pack.

– Tri counts are average for trees of these respective sizes. The younger trees are mostly under 1k tris which makes them fairly light for most users.

– I did NOT alter tree sway on these assets. Based on my experience with the previous packs, I now recommend using the Tree Movement Control mod to reduce sway, which can eliminate sway on LODs as well, and doubles for random tree rotation.

Tree LOD Fix is critical as always, and the larger trees may warrant Ultimate Level of Detail and/or Adaptive Prop Visibility Distance.
