Xerox Tower – Rochester, New York
Innovation Square, formerly known as Xerox Tower, is a 443-foot-tall (135 Meters) skyscraper located in downtown Rochester, New York. Originally Designed by architect Welton Becket and built by Turner Construction Co in 1968 to serve as the headquarters of Xerox Corporation. Once complete, Xerox Tower became the tallest building of its kind at the time, constructed with poured-in-place exposed aggregate concrete. Xerox Tower is also the tallest building in Rochester and the third tallest in New York outside of New York City. Recently, the Xerox Square complex was sold to Gallina Development, who renamed it "Innovation Square" and announced plans for retrofitting. The skyscraper is the centerpiece of the 2.7-acre complex, which includes housing, commercial spaces, and college student living areas. The complex spans an entire city block in the Washington Square neighborhood in Downtown Rochester. The property also features a two-story office building, a 700-seat auditorium, and an underground parking garage.
The building features reflective brown windows on it’s 30-story facade, with air conditioning vents spiraling around the tower, occupying a portion of the 5th and 20th floors. Each side of the tower features 25 beveled "fins" or spires which give the building its menacing look. Looking at the building from a 45 degree angle, you’ll notice the spires completely hide the windows, allowing for the building to become a sea of concrete. At the top of the tower, there are 16 flood lights, which can be replaced with B.O.B. to allow for other color options. I chose to keep the Xerox branding on the building because I enjoy how it looks and there were limited reference materials showing the new Innovation Square additions.
