Description:

2019 – This map is far out of date (it is from when the game first came out). Consider trying another map – I’ve tried updating this but its a huge amount of work to try to raise the entire map up so that tunnels can be built (long ago, we had no tunnels possible!), and a deep enough ocean to look realistic.

————————
3 volcano fumaroles that send up smoke, a play area that is almost entirely flat and level, a maze of beautiful beaches and islands, the striking Stokksnes mountain as a backdrop, lots of resources and a geothermal pool that sends up plumes of steam available as a park in my workshop, made to go with this map…. this one is a hats off to Iceland. The only thing that’s missing is the ability to draw a glacier.

The fumaroles are short in height and in the play area, so you can see them up close.

Location: Hornafjörður, Southeast Iceland. The fishing town of Höfn is where the start square is.
Some beautiful photographs of this location can be found here https://www.flickr.com/photos/arnar/ He has more photos of this bay including some with aurora borealis and local volcanic explosions at night.

There are more trees in this map than perhaps in all of Iceland itself (lol), but I wanted to have some resources and avoid total monotony.

This map was made starting with a rough heightmap of Höfn and Hornafjörður, Iceland. It was then run through Wilbur and then perfected for the game in the CS map editor. I added many islands and another river and made sure the elevations made sense as well (made sure underwater land between islands and mainland have enough elevation to allow for tunnels, made sure almost all the playable land area is at one level for those who like big cities and lots of room.

Remember to subscribe to the Pine Tree on the right hand side…. it will also be used in some upcoming maps. It has a very nice complementary color to the European theme.

"Höfn is located on a peninsula in the south-east of Iceland. The name Höfn means harbour and it is a fishing port surrounded on three sides by the sea, with beaches on the long shoreline on the south-east. Sand bars and glacial rivers traverse this area with many shifting lagoons and sand reefs being formed. Höfn is surrounded by several small islands, the largest of which is Mikley, followed by Krókalátur and Hellir to the east of the town. Höfn is one of very few harbours in the southern part of Iceland and it needs to be navigated with care due to the changing pattern of shoals."
