Chaimite V-200 [Prop]
The Chaimite is undoubtedly the most iconic military vehicle in Portuguese history. This Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) was initially designed and built for use in the Portuguese Colonial War, a conflict from 1961 to 1974 where Portugal fought against independence movements in its African colonies.
However, its most renowned contribution to history was during the “25th of April” Revolution, also known as the Carnation Revolution. This pivotal event not only ended 41 years of authoritarian dictatorship under the “Estado Novo” regime but also brought an end to 13 years of prolonged colonial conflicts.
The revolution of April 25, 1974, marked a turning point for Portugal, transitioning the nation from a period of oppressive rule and warfare into a democracy. It is in this context that the Chaimite became a symbol of liberation and change. Images of the vehicle, filled with soldiers who sided with the revolutionary forces, became emblematic of the day that marked the beginning of Portugal’s transition toward democracy.
Today (the day this asset was released), marks the 50th anniversary of the “25th of April”.
After the revolution, the Chaimite continued to serve in the Portuguese military. It was deployed in international peacekeeping efforts, including the mission in Kosovo in the late 1990s, showcasing its ongoing utility in global military operations. Eventually, as newer technologies and vehicles emerged, the Chaimite was retired from active service, marking the end of its operational life.
