UMM Alter
UMM (União Metalo-Mecânica) is a Portuguese metalworks factory located in Lisbon. The company was founded in 1977 with the primary goal of producing utility vehicles. Their initial 4×4 design was inspired by the French prototype car, the Cournill. Later, in the 1980s, UMM introduced the Alter model, which is the model recreated in this asset!
The Portuguese UMM Alter stands out as a distinctive and robust vehicle that has made a lasting impact on Portugal’s automotive history. UMM’s vehicles have consistently showcased exceptional versatility and durability, serving various purposes such as police cars for the GNR, firefighting vehicles, troop transports for the Portuguese army, and even as a popemobile. Although the majority of UMM Alters found their way into the civilian market, where they garnered a dedicated following among adventure enthusiasts.
Despite production coming to a halt in the late 1990s, the UMM Alter remains an icon and an esteemed symbol of Portuguese engineering. Interestingly, although many institutions have since replaced them with more modern vehicles, fire departments across Portugal continue to rely on these dependable UMM Alter vehicles.
