Klara Church
Klara Church in Stockholm has a history dating back to the 13th century. The original building was demolished during the Reformation in the 16th century, when Sweden broke away from the Catholic Church. Soon after, during king Johan III’s rule (son of Gustaf Vasa), a new church was built on the site, which evolved into the Baroque-style structure that stands today, just a stone’s throw away from the central station.
The church has an elegant red brick façade adorned with large arched windows, decorative pilasters, and intricate stone details. Rising 116 meters into the sky, its towering spire is one of the tallest in Scandinavia. The building has undergone several renovations over the centuries to preserve its structure and appearance while adapting to both time and urban development.
Klara Church has remained a constant presence despite the dramatic transformations of its surroundings. During the 1950s/60s, vast parts of the city center were demolished in an effort to modernize Stockholm, a trend seen in many other European cities in the post-war decades. Entire blocks were torn down in the heart of Stockholm, and large-scale excavations took place to accommodate new subway lines and underground parking garages just meters from Klara Church. Luckily, the church was spared, maintaining its place as an enduring part of the skyline.
