Katarina Church
History
Katarina kyrka, located on Södermalm in Stockholm, Sweden, is a prominent baroque church with a long and eventful history. Construction began in 1656, and the church was completed and inaugurated in 1695. It was named after Princess Katarina, mother of the reigning king at the time (Karl X Gustav), sister of Johan III, and granddaughter of Gustaf Vasa.
Throughout the centuries, Katarina kyrka has suffered major fires, most notably in 1723 and again in 1990. Each time, it was carefully rebuilt to preserve its original baroque character while incorporating elements from the era of restoration.
