Muffler Man Roadside Advertising Statue
He’s painted like sh*t and pushing 60, but who can resist The Muffler Man?
Manufactured between 1963 and 1974, the Muffler Man was a 20-ish foot tall fibreglass man designed to hold items and signage.
The use of roadside novelties represented a means for independent businesses to differentiate themselves in an era before two-lane highways were bypassed by freeways; businesses located directly on the main road would rely heavily on neon signage, promotional displays and gimmicks to make themselves more visible to passing motorists.
When businesses closed or were sold, often the figures would be repainted and adapted to represent different characters or were relocated. Thousands of Muffler Men were built, and many still survive across the US today, a weird roadside staple.
