1953 Studebaker Commander
1953 was the first year for the newly designed bodies for Studebaker. They brought in a new era of low slung lines and sleek body styles which many, even Studebaker, called very "European" in its design. While staying true to its design from Bob Bourke and Raymond Loewy, these coupes, sedans and wagons were stylish, yet lacked the power to back it up. All Commander’s came with a 232 OHV V8 in 1953, while its sister model the Champion (with a similar body shape) came with an 169 CU-in inline six. The V8 only produced around 120 hp, while the inline six made a whopping 85 hp. What they lacked in power they did make up in options and trim levels. Some options included: exhaust deflector, wide whitewall tires, tire chains, cigarette lighter, back up lights, tissue dispenser and even power steering. Studebaker used this body style for years up until 1964 on the Hawk model, although quite heavily modified.
