"Stockholm originally decided to start removing its inner-city tram network in 1939.
The plan was to modernize the city by replacing trams with metro and buses.
However, due to the outbreak of World War II, the transition was delayed.
The city’s existing trams were aging and worn out. Therefore, new vehicles were needed to keep Stockholm moving. In 1943, the design office of Stockholms Spårvägar proposed a modern bogie tram. This new model was designated the A25, known as the Mustang.
All A25 units were originally built for left-hand traffic. A total of 80 cars were produced: 68 for Stockholms Spårvägar and 12 for Malmö Stads Spårvägar.
The A25 served Stockholm’s inner city until September 2, 1967.
This date marked the day before Sweden’s nationwide switch to right-hand traffic and the final day of operations for Stockholm’s inner-city tram network.
The era came to an end on Line 6 when car No. 440, at 7:00 PM, departed from Roslagstull toward Sofia on its final journey. After completing the run, it was sent directly to be scrapped. Today, only a single Stockholm unit remains, preserved at the Stockholm Transport Museum (Stockholms Spårvägsmuseum).
While the Stockholm trams were retired, the Malmö cars were converted for right-hand traffic in 1967. They remained in service until Malmö’s tramway was closed in 1973. Unlike their Stockholm counterparts, several of the Malmö cars have been preserved."
