A DDI is an interchange based on allowing traffic to cross over to the "Wrong Side" of the road at either side of a highway. This allows cars to make entrances and exits to/from the ramps without having to stop at a light. The only light phases are at the "X" junction where traffic crosses over. They just alternate traffic directions between the two straight paths. From there, the traffic can make protected turns on and off the freeway wherever it needs.
