Cartagena, Spain
Cartagena, Región de Murcia, España
¡Acho pijo!
Cartagena is located on Spain’s south-eastern coast in the region of Murcia. One of Europe’s deepest natural harbors, Cartagena has always been an important port town (it was called Novo Carthago under the Romans). Hannibal began his overland journey to Rome from here, and the Roman Amphitheater remains intact to this day. The fortifications (fortalezas) on the hilltops surrounding the port date back to roughly the 1850s, but are mostly abandoned today. They suffered significant damage during the Spanish Civil War- Cartagena was actually the last city to surrender to Franco in 1939.
Today, Cartagena is a major cruise ship stop for many Mediterranean lines. Still an active Naval Base, the city has roughly 250,000 residents in the city proper. Ambling pedestrian-only streets are perfect to admire Boroque, Neoclassical, and Art-Nouveau architecture.
The starting area of this map is roughly the Puerto Pesquero and Santa Lucia areas.
This map pulls real-life data from terrain.party, roughly from La Unión to El Portus. It includes a lot of water, but I wanted to include the industrial port area of Cerro de la Campa. Some of the fortalezas have been recreated, but some are still blurred in aerial photographs because the land is still owned by the Spanish government. I also took some liberties with the map by including a flowing river between the area of Barrio de la Concepción and the Navy Base, as well as a more liberal application of vegetation and greenery (it just looked better).
This map uses the Realistic Tropical v1.2.1 map theme, and a few houses from the Lucas house and Roman Walls collections by Armesto for the fortalezas.
