The Hofgartentor with the arcades was built by Leo von Klenze from 1816-1822 to close the southern side of the Hofgarten. Klenze, beside Carl Friedrich Schinkel, was the most important architect for classicism in Germany. His work was the first classicistic building in Munich and by that started a style in the bavarian capital, that Munich should be known for till today.
