Description:

This map is inspired by the coast line and terrain around Swansea Bay[www.google.co.uk] in South Wales, UK.

I chose this region as it has a really interesting mix of industry, commercial and residential. There’s the steelworks, a lot of mining and farming, two large docks with smaller marinas, several busy city centres and sprawling suburbs, a large University on the south coast, beaches across most of the coastline, nature reserves, lot of green spaces, small towns and villages. Take a look at the area in Google Maps[www.google.co.uk] if you’re searching for inspiration.

Though I’ve tried to stay true to many of the features of the area, this is by no means meant to be an accurate replica. I’ve made a lot of changes for gameplay reasons:

There are four outside road connections. The M4, A483, A465 and other major roads are included but all converted to motorways to improve traffic flow. Junction 42 is fairly accurate, but the other junctions have their roundabouts replaced by free-flowing interchanges. There are four outside rail connections, some of the major rail routes are included, but a lot have been left out.

The docks are shaped as they appear in real life (well, sort of) but simplified and widened at various parts to allows in-game ships to enter. Note that the shipping lines have 4 outside connections and go right into the docks, so if you alter the quays, you may need to use More Network Stuff to alter the ship paths.

There are four outside air connections and the flight paths head toward the general area of Swansea airport, which is off the map area to the west.

The coastline is fairly true to life and include the man-made breakwalls. The Afan, Neath, Dulais and Tawe rivers are included and follow roughly the right path. That said, I’ve widened and deepened them considerably to allow for enough water flow to be useable in-game. I also created a new river so that the start square has running water.

There are plenty of resources and I’ve tried to place the ore, trees and fertile land in roughly the right areas, though have taken some artistic license with this.

Required Items

This is a vanilla map so no DLC is required. In fact, you don’t strictly need to install anything listed in the required items section, the map will work perfectly fine without them. That said, the map looks much better with pdelmo’s Leafy Tree Set and Leafy Bush, plus, this is Wales so sheep are all but mandatory.

Map Theme

I built the map using Raffa’s SCT-HOMECOMING, but there are a number of European temperate themes which would work.

LUT

I used Photorealistic_lut_Final_by_Reaper which I think is one of the best out there, but this is really a personal preference. Choose what works best for you. If you want to go for realism then Overcast-Natural or Rain Day may offer a more authentic feel.

Highly Recommended
  • 81 Tiles – to make the most of the map you really need to break out of the basic 9 or 25 tiles, this will allow you to build out to Port Talbot, down the west coast toward The Mumbles and into the northern areas which are just begging for a reservoir, dam, power station etc.
  • Unlimited Trees Mod – it’s surprisingly easy to hit the tree limit when trying to create realistic woodland! I thinned a lot of the trees out but there’s still 200K+ of them. If you want to place a lot of trees you may hit the limit so install this mod to remove the worry.
  • More Network Stuff and Docks – the vanilla quays are so ugly, rebuild the docks with something more realistic.
Finally

Apologies to the people who live in the area of Cwmdu, I flooded a lot of your town to make a lake. Sorry about that.
