宫殿是帝王处理朝政或宴居的建筑物，宫殿是帝王朝会和居住的地方，规模宏大，形象壮丽，格局严谨，给人强烈的精神感染，突现王权的尊严。中国传统文化注重巩固人间秩序，与西方和伊斯兰建筑以宗教建筑为主不同，中国建筑成就最高、规模最大的就是宫殿。从原始社会到西周，宫殿的萌芽经历了一个合首领居住、聚会、祭祀多功能为一体的混沌未分的阶段，发展为与祭祀功能分化，只用于君王后妃朝会与居住。在宫内，宫殿常依托城市而存在，以中轴对称规整严谨的城市格局，突出宫殿在都城中的地位。
The palace is the building where the emperor deals with the government or the banquet. The palace is the place where the emperor meets and lives.
