Second Bank of the United States
The Second Bank of the United States was as its name implies, the second attempt at central banking in the United States. Its building was designed by William Strickland and built 1818-1824. While successful at its own job of regulating currency and ensuring convertibility, it was politically unpopular with farmers and financiers, and was wrecked by Andrew Jackson in his second term after he refused to renew the charter and removed all public deposits. Today, its building still stands, holding a portrait gallery
