The Call building or Central Tower as it is now called was initially constructed in 1898. It was part of a dick measuring contest (pun intended) to have the tallest most decorated building in San Francisco. After completion it stood 96m tall and housed the staff of the Call newspaper. The building survived the 1906 earthquake and was only damaged by it. In 1938 Albert Roller refurbished the tower (read: removed all decorations) and made it looking like it does nowdays.
