FOR CONSOLE PLAYERS WHO CANNOT DOWNLOAD FROM THE STEAM WORKSHOP
and for those on PC who are gluttons for punishment:
Here is the 12-Step recipe for creating this starter map by hand (this is how I figured out how to re-create it myself)…
1.) Start a NEW GAME from the Main Menu, and then select the map called SEVEN LAKES. The Mass Transit DLC is required to use this map. If you don’t have Mass Transit…well, sorry. I hope you’ll enjoy what you learn from the series, because it doesn’t have to exactly follow my build to work. If you have a PC, it’s likely you’ll be able to download the map from here (not sure).
3.) Build a 2-Lane Road between the two highway ends just so the game gives you access to the much much cheaper 2-Lane Gravel Road.
4.) Demolish the 2-Lane Road between the two highway ends (you’ll get a few credits back in your bank account).
5.) Count out 47 units WEST from the OUTBOUND highway end (assuming right-hand drive) at 90°–this is your FIRST GUIDE ROAD. You can follow the dashed blue road guide for 30 units (which will be the third blue circle) to save yourself from spending on 30 units of road you’ll demolish later, and then just build a 17-unit segment from there. Keep in mind that each blue line that pops out as you build a road appears in 10-unit increments away from where you started the road.
The tricky part is Step 6–once you get this right, you’re practically home free:
6.) Extend a gravel road for 10 units from the end of the FIRST GUIDE ROAD at a 154° angle–the game will tell you the angle–and then move it ever so slightly until it flips to a 153° angle, then pull it back a tiny bit until it flips back to 154°. Now, click to build the road. This is your SECOND GUIDE ROAD.
CONGRATULATIONS–maybe–your SECOND GUIDE ROAD should be at a 90° angle to Main Avenue! Now let’s check your work to be sure:
7.) Extend a gravel road 3 units from your FIRST GUIDE ROAD on your SECOND GUIDE ROAD at a 90° angle. You will not actually build this road–you’re just extending it to make sure you’ve hit the 153° angle in Step 6. Extend this gravel road for 188 units–the end should still be completely on land. If you extend it 191 units and the end of the road switches from a surface road to a covered bridge, then you’ve nailed it dead on! HOORAY! If it turns into a covered bridge at 190 units, you’re probably close enough, so just roll with it if you like! If you didn’t hit the mark, then you need to demolish the SECOND GUIDE ROAD to hit the angle in Step 6. RIGHT CLICK to cancel building this road.
Now let’s build Main Avenue! YAY! This is the easy part!
8.) Extend a gravel road 3 units from your FIRST GUIDE ROAD on your SECOND GUIDE ROAD at a 90° angle. Make sure this road is 14 units long. The end here is the intersection of Main Avenue and Mill Street. Extend Main Avenue from here for 36 units. This is the intersection with Broadway! Draw in Broadway for just 6 units to the west of Main Avenue to mark it.
9.) Extend Main Avenue another 48 units. This is the intersection with Prospect Avenue. Draw in Prospect Avenue for 12 units west of Main Avenue to mark it.
10.) Demolish the 14 unit length (two short segments) at the south end of Main Avenue, and then demolish all of your guide roads.
11.) Congratulations! Your map should look exactly like the one in the tutorial to start out.
12.) Save your work so you don’t lose your starting point! Enjoy!
