Description:

The Berlin Cathedral (Berliner Dom) sits directly on the Spree river in the middle of Berlin. The first church in that location was begun in 1536. The current building was begun in 1894 and completed in 1905, but was heavily damaged in World War 2. The top of the dome was destoyed when the lantern caught fire due to Allied bombing in 1944. In 1975, the remains of the northern part of the church were demolished by the GDR government. The church that we see today was restored and reinaugurated in 1993.

The model that we present to you here has also had a tumultuous history. The first publication of the Berliner Dom for Cities:Skylines was created by felixandre.hupka in 2016. By 2017, I was deep into building Berlin at 1:1 scale. I tried to get in touch with the creator to see if we could make a re-scaled version. I never got a response, so I modded the building for myself, mainly for scale and to add a subterranean section to the backside, which required the "no-base" shader. In 2018, Armesto began a completely new model. He finished the main dome and lantern in 2018, and added the four smaller domes in 2019. Over the past few days I have hacked, sliced, and adjusted the many parts into a single building. It’s part felix’s original model, part my adjustments and additions, and mostly Armesto’s glorious domes. Like Berlin itself, the model is a work-in-progress.

The current model has a main building (no-base shader) and 3 sub-buildings, one of which (the lantern) has a rotor-shader submesh. I’ve made a brand new LOD for the release, baking the textures from the various parts. In total, the main model has 36k tris, and the LOD model has 494 tris. We hope you appreciate this release, and accept that we decided that it was better to share it in its current state than to not share it at all. It should make a nice addition to your skyline!
