A bit more than just a payday loans shop, the origin story of this business is actually kind of interesting. Scottish guy moves to the U.S. – Florida, specifically, in the late 80s. He buys a bakery biz and notices that people are trying to cash cheques outside of banks … because banks. I don’t know if its still done – I haven’t cashed a cheque at a convenience store since probably 1994. But … he says, at the time, "Why can’t we just do that?" And it worked. And yes, the name is an amalgamation of America and Scotland – at least that’s what Wikipedia tells me. It’s IRL, you can have a gander here[google.com].
