Description:

aka AT&T Long Distance Building or 32 Sixth Avenue is a massive 27-story Art Deco skyscraper located in Tribeca neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City.

History

The building was designed by Ralph Walker who also designed the Western Union Building located nearby. Completed in 1932, it has become one of largest telecommunications buildings in the world. It conatined systems responsible for long-ditance and owersea phone calls as well as telegraph, telephoto and teletype services. During peak periods of work it acomodated up to 5500 employees. AT&T sold 32 Avenue of the Americas in 1999, and since then it has been occupied by several companies. In 2002, during a major renovation, two telecommunication masts were added, significantly increasing the building’s height.

About this building

This building looks like a massive mountain made of brick. It has trapezoidal shape and occupies the entire lot.
The exterior looks quite minimalistic, but if you look closely you can find various ornaments and rather intricate brickwork. There are also some decorative panels with geometric patterns. The top part looks cluttered with machinery, huge coolers and antennas occupy the entire roof.

Model

I started modeling this in 2020. And it didn’t go well. I abandoned it 2 or 3 times because this building is huge and insanely difficult to model. I Finally found enough motivation to redo it from scratch for the last time, and here is the result. I didn’t use any real-life photos, almost every element (including doors, windows, panels and vents) was modeled by me. Also most of the textures were procedurally generated with Blender Nodes. So yeah, it was a lot of work, I hope you like the result!
