A twin model to Toyota Alphard, the Vellfire (ヴェルファイア), was introduced on 2008. According to Toyota’s press release, the Vellfire emphasizes on "strength and strong individuality" and marketed as a sportier alternative to the Alphard.
The name "Vellfire" was derived from "velvet" and "fire" to emphasize "smooth" and "passionate" as characteristics of the vehicle.
