Description:

Hi everyone,

Here’s my Patagonia Map Theme.

No Theme Mixer mod required.

Please read the description – it’ll help you make the most of it!

Geographic Description

I created this theme specifically for my upcoming Patagonia-inspired map after realising there are no themes that do justice to the stark beauty and colours found in this particular region shared by Argentina and Chile on the tip of South America.

You can also use this theme if you’re building a map inspired in other cold and dry regions like parts of Washington state, Oregon, Nevada, Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Alberta, Saskatchewan, the Canadian Arctic, Coastal Greenland, the Icelandic and Scottish Highlands, Norway, Central Asia, the Tibetan Plateau and parts of the South Island in New Zealand.

Theme Description

This theme is ideal if you’re looking for a more rugged and outdoorsy vibe for your city, or if you want to place snow without having to use a winter map or theme, as sand has been converted to snow to allow for glaciers and snow-capped mountains. Just make sure you use it as such and remove sand from beaches and rivers using the Extra Landscaping Tools mod – check the Visual Recommendations section below – as it’s not intended for that purpose.

The cliff texture is meant to avoid knitting patterns and to provide a more rugged look to the theme. However, please be aware this was at the expense of good cliff resolution at close distances.

The grass colour recreates the dry plains east of the Patagonian Andes (commonly known as "pampas”).

The water colour attempts to recreate the metallic turquoise found in glacial Patagonian lakes and rivers.

Ruined surfaces are grey, as coastlines and river banks tend to be rocky rather than sandy in the region.

Fertile, oil and ore areas recreate the colours found in Patagonian bogs (commonly known as "turbales”).

Finally, pavement and roads have a lighter colour than usual in an attempt to recreate the use of concrete instead of asphalt, which tends to be preferred in the region due to the extreme climate.

Climate

The theme is for temperate maps, with temperatures ranging within historical highs and lows (30°C / 86°F down to -28°C / -18°F).

Weather probabilities based on as real as possible data for the region:

  • Rain probability 6%.
  • Fog probability 5%.
  • Northern Lights probability 0% – well, technically Southern Lights. Even though they are not impossible in Patagonia, once they appear in game they appear every night, which is highly unrealistic. It was therefore set to 0%.

Disaster Probabilities

Disaster probabilities – for those with Natural Disasters DLC – are based on as real as possible data for the region:

  • Forest fire probability 6%.
  • Earthquake probability 6%.
  • Tsunami probability 2%.
  • Meteor strike probability 1%.
  • Thunderstorm probability 1%.
  • Sinkhole probability 1%.
  • Tornado probability 0%.

Visual Recommendations – not required but highly recommended

The theme has no required items and will work just fine without mods or in Vanilla maps.

However, if you want improved visuals, more realistic colours and location, I’d suggest that you:

  1. Subscribe to the Ultimate Eye Candy mod: https://steamcommunity.com/workshop/filedetails/?id=672248733.
  2. Select the European LUT.
  3. Set the latitude to anywhere between -42° and -56°, and the longitude between -63° and -75°.
  4. Set the Global light intensity to 6.291.
  5. Subscribe to the Extra Landscapting Tools mod: https://steamcommunity.com/workshop/filedetails/?id=502750307.
  6. Remove sand from beaches and rivers using the sand brush in the Landscaping Tools.
  7. Place sand as glaciers and snow on mountains, valleys or wherever else you’d like using the sand brush located in Landscaping Tools.

Textures and Disclaimer

I do not own any of the textures used in this theme.

All textures have been made by far more skilled creators, namely:

  • Cliff Diffuse – Realistic Boreal by Captain Soap.
  • Cliff Normal – Natural Beauty by Turtle.
  • Downward Road Diffuse – Owl’s Los Angeles Theme by OWL.
  • Grass – Owl’s Los Angeles Theme by OWL.
  • Gravel – Cleyra – Map Theme by creativeDEX.
  • Oil – Owl’s Tropicity Theme by OWL.
  • Ore – Owl’s Los Angeles Theme by OWL.
  • Pavement – Monte Belo by Mark Fire.
  • Ruined – Cleyra – Map Theme by creativeDEX.
  • Sand Diffuse – Väterchen Frost – Winter Theme’s Water Normal by hadece.
  • Upward Road Diffuse – Owl’s Los Angeles Theme by OWL.
  • Water Foam – Starburg Map Theme by Ronyx69.
  • Water Normal – Seenu (Official Map Theme) by Strictoaster.

If you are one of these creators and want me to remove your texture just let me know, as my intention was not to copy but simply to create a more realistic theme for the map I’m building.

Upcoming Patagonia-inspired map

The map is about 70% complete and in the final stages of detailing as at August 2021. The idea is to recreate the Chilean fjords and Argentine pampas near Puerto Natales and Río Turbio, with the inclusion of the Southern Ice Fields, the contrast between rainy western and dry eastern Patagonia, glacial lakes similar to those near El Chaltén, and deltas resembling those of the Santa Cruz and Gallegos rivers. I’m not sure when I will be releasing it, but will link to the description once it’s complete.

Feedback

Don’t forget to rate and leave feedback so I can keep improving the theme.

Enjoy!
