Description:

WARNING! Standing too close to the rim may cause you to feel intense vertigo.

The Great Divide is all about epic proportions and capturing a landscape that many would consider the definition of a natural wonder. I have intentionally made this map more suitable for a National Park style build but I’ve also left some room for you to try and build a proper city on it. You might even attempt to construct a bridge across the canyon however such an endeavour would be extremely challenging, even for the most experienced builders.

BE ADVISED. THIS IS NOT A EASY MAP TO PLAY ON. IT WILL CHALLENGE YOU.

BACKGROUND

This map is based on a 1:1 terrain heightmap of the Colorado River in Arizona, just north and upstream of Grand Canyon National Park and east of the Kaibab Plateau. The name is supposed to be a meaningful and poetic metaphor for how our world today is polarized and increasingly divided. Feel free to rename it "The Big Ass Crack" or "Poop Ravine" as you see fit. I have uploaded a let’s play style video of me setting up the themes and building a small town on the map. I’m sure atleast some will find it helpful for starting up your own builds.

DLCS & MODS

Only requirement to play is the Mass Transit DLC. This is due to the 2-lane highway networks and monorail tracks used for the custom arch bridge. I have also setup Intersection Marking Tool and TM:PE for junctions and interchanges map wide so if you use these mods that should be in your game already. The mods are not required but I would recommend them. Same goes for Fine Road Anarchy mod which will make it easier for you to edit some of the original networks.

THEMES & VISUALS

I recommend using the Great Divide Theme Mix and the Laviante LUT for this map. This combination is shown in almost all the screenshots. To use the theme mix you will need the Theme Mixer 2 mod and all the required themes (9 in total). The one click collection lets you subscribe to all themes and other required items in one click.

If you don’t want to use a theme mix, I’d recommend going with the Not So Red Canyon Theme. See the below gif for a comparision of a few different themes.

Don’t even bother reviewing or rating this map without a decent theme. It will look disgusting and I will give you big sass for not being subscribed to the ability to read. Also, keep in mind that I use other mods that also affect visuals such as Daylight Classic, Cubemap Replacer, and Clouds & Fog Toggler, so the map may look different in your game even if theme and LUT is setup the same way.

DISCLAIMERS

In real life, the north and south rims of the Grand Canyon are much more forested. You don’t have to tell me about it. I already know. The real location where the heightmaps are from is a lot more dry tho so I’d consider this a sort of middle ground between the two. There’s also the vanilla tree limits that simple wouldn’t let me to place enough trees to make the plateau adequately forested, nor would the vanilla generic pines by themselves create a satisfying illusion of realism, which is why I ended up relying more heavily on bush and grass vegetation throughout the map. This map should not be seen in any way as me condoning desecration of the real world Grand Canyon with for example freeway bridges, poop dams, and strip malls. It’s just a game. Don’t be mad at me please.
