JR Shikoku 5000 Series "MARINE LINER"
The "Marine Liner" is a rapid train operated jointly by JR West and JR Shikoku between Okayama Station and Takamatsu Station.
Since the opening of the Seto-ohashi Bridge in 1988, JR 213 series trains had been used, but due to brine damage and other reasons, they were withdrawn from this train service in 2003.
This 5000 series (& 223 series) replaced the 213 series. Basically, the train is operated in a five-car formation consisting of three 5000 series cars belonging to JR Shikoku and two 223-5000 belonging to JR West. During rush hours, however, the train is operated in a 7-car formation with two additional 5000 series.
In 2007,223-2000 were combined with 5000 series as intermediate cars to form a 6-car train, but this was discontinued in 2010.
