Built in 1936 as a result of FDR’s New Deal, this Post Office served the city of Gary, Indiana until the 1970s, existing now as one of many abandoned buildings in the city. It was designed by Howard Lovewell Cheney.
My father worked for the United States Postal Service for 38 years and passed away on May 23rd, 2023. He had started working for the USPS in September 1969, starting out in this building for his first few years. He had plenty of stories from that early time. The building today is in serious neglect and, like many others in the city, is in danger of either further decay and collapsing or being demolished. I wanted to preserve it for us to enjoy in our digital cities.
