Description and history of the building :

Architect: Marcel BARNIER, Jean DAUGROIS
Address: District of The Park in Royan, Charente-Maritime, France
Date of construction: 1955
Program: 3 apartments

It is opposite a comfortable Belle Époque villa, in the center of a pleasant corner plot, with a small building appearing at the start of Boulevard Garnier on a television screen over the river on the sea. Composed of two recessed volumes, it originally included three apartments. Its refined composition, its distribution over three level equivalents and its mono-oriented views are all details that bring this project closer to those of Brazilian architects, such as Niemeyer or Reidy. The ground floor, portrait on three of the four sides, forms a solid foundation for the two upper floors. These, framed by a concrete slab, form a monumental volume, where the main facade is embellished, without favoring the penetration of light. The extended walls and bay windows have been pushed back to make room for two balconies spanning the entire width of the building. At the top, a minute cloister, a masterpiece of masonry, tends to return this borrowed space to the dwelling, symbolically referring to the amputated volume. Daugrois and Barnier, architects from Royan who took part in the Reconstruction, sign here an original achievement. We also owe Barnier the Center school project and active participation in the development of block 16.
