De Nieuwe Kerk te Bandoeng/ The New Church in Bandung
De Nieuwe Kerk (nowadays known as Bethel Church) is a modernized Protestant Church in Bandung City. It was designed by Charles Prosper Wolff (C.P.W.) Schoemaker for free in 1924 and completed in 1925. The cost needed to built it was estimated around 40.000 gulden. It has various styles of architecture combined in the design, the overall facade is using the modernist architecture style with ornaments or more commonly known as art deco, it also has pillars that were influenced by Byzantine architecture, a bell tower from romanesque or gothic architecture, and also it used wood shingle for the roof, a local material that can be commonly found around Indonesia.
The design of the church incorporating various symbolism from the bible, for example the 5 steps of stairs of the entrance symbolizes 5 stones that David used against Goliath, the basic building layout that resembles the form of a cross, the proportion of the facade that symbolizes the Trinity, and many other inside the building which cannot be seen from the outside.
