The Di Bruno Brothers House of cheese is a prominent business in the Philadelphia 9th Street Italian Market corridor. Two brothers opened a grocery store in 1939. In 1965 feeling the pressure to pivot due to competition from large format grocers the brothers gathered inspiration from a trip to Switzerland trying the local delicacies. They decided to rebrand their store as "The House of Cheese" with imported cheeses and cured meats. The rest is history.
This building is not a 100% replica of the current location. I melded the current storefront look with a "House of Cheese" mural a couple of blocks away on a different building owned by Di Brunos. I think the end product is better and the style fits nicely in the Little Italy Collection.
This building asset has a color map for the brick. I have made the building zoned as a "Right Corner" building so that the illuminated mural on the right facade won’t be obstructed.
This cheese shop is another classic addition my for my Little Italy collection. The collection focuses on independent Italian American businesses with appealing vintage signage that have endured for decades in places like NYC, Philly, Detroit, St Louis, SF, etc.. Expect to see pasta shops, cheese shops, cafes, bakeries, butchers and much more.
