Don Mills Collegiate Institute
Don Mills Collegiate Institute is a High School located in Toronto Ontario, Canada. The school opened in 1959 and was designed by "John B. Parkin Associates". The school is unique in that it was the first of 4 schools built in Toronto that featured both a High School and Middle School in the same building; those schools being Don Mills Collegiate Institute, and Don Mills Middle School. The original plan however was to build two separate campuses on the land but it would instead be decided to put both schools under one roof as a means to save money. While the two schools share a building they are ultimately two separate entities with their own administration, gyms, classrooms, and cafeterias, with the only shared facility being the library. Don Mills CI is now one of only 3 schools left in Toronto that feature this unique arrangement (the others being Stephen Leacock CI, and Lester B. Pearson CI). The High School section of the building opened first in 1959 with the middle school section opening two years later in 1961. In 1963 the high school section would see an extension to its classroom wing, while in 1967 the middle school section would see its own expansion with a new cafeteria. The final expansion of the school would come in the 90’s when a new art centre was added to the high school section.
The school features: 35 Standard Classrooms (21 High School, 14 Middle School), 6 Science Labs (4 High School, 2 Middle School), 2 Double Gyms (1 High School, 1 Middle School), 25m Swimming Pool, 2 Cafeterias (1 High School with Stage, 1 Middle School), and a Library (shared).
