Gustaf Vasa Kyrka
Gustaf Vasa’s church, located in Stockholm, Sweden.
Gustav Vasa (1496-1560), born Eriksson, led a rebellion in Stockholm against Danish control and became the first King of Sweden on the 6th of June 1523. This marked the end of the Kalmar Union and King Christian II of Denmark’s rule, and established Sweden as an independent nation.
During Vasa’s reign he established a centralized monarchy with important reforms, and cut ties with the Catholic Church – introducing the Protestant Reformation in its place.
Gustav Vasa is remembered as a key figure in Swedish history.
The church with his name was inaugurated on the 6th of June 1906 in a central part of the capital, Vasastan (Vasa-town), fittingly also named after him.
