First generation Grand Wagoneer SJ was built from 1963 through 1991, a whopping 28 years in production, with minimal body changes throughout. Through those years they went through the hands of 3 companies, from Kaiser Jeep, to AMC, then on to Chrysler. This 1989 model being that of Chrysler. The Wagoneer was vastly different than the likes of other utility vehicles and 4x4s of that time. The luxury interior and versatility set it apart from that of GM, Ford, International, Toyota and Land Rover which had very sparse truck like interiors. The Wagoneer had a very car like interior with plush seats, factory radio and air conditioning. Due to the mini oil crisis in the early 90s and ever changing and demanding motor vehicle safety standards Chrysler decided to retire the SJ model due to its antiquated platform and poor fuel efficiency in 1991. In 1993 they did give the nameplate to the ZJ model, but that only lasted till 1994.

Chrysler was bought out by Fiat in 2015 then merged with Stellantis in 2021.

After another 28 years in the dark without a wagoneer we saw a new Grand Wagoneer introduced for Jeeps lineup in 2022.
