Monnickendam’s 1668

The Waegh in Monnickendam is a historic weigh house built in 1668, located in the heart of the city. It was originally used to weigh goods such as cheese, grain, and fish, ensuring fair trade. The building’s Renaissance-style architecture reflects the prosperity of Monnickendam during the Dutch Golden Age. Over the centuries, it also served as a meeting place and later housed a fish-smoking business. Today, the Waegh is a museum and cultural center, preserving the city’s history. Its iconic bell tower and rich heritage make it a symbol of Monnickendam’s vibrant past.
