The Legislative Assembly of Pernambuco is housed in a historically significant 19th-century building known as the Palácio Joaquim Nabuco. The building was designed by architect José Tiburcio Pereira Magalhães and inaugurated on March 1, 1875, though it was still unfinished at the time, with construction finally completed on January 20, 1876.
The building holds the distinction of being the first structure in Brazil built specifically to serve as the headquarters of a legislative house Recife. Located on Rua da Aurora in Recife, the building sits on the banks of the Capibaribe River, near the Ginásio Pernambucano.
The architectural style follows classical Doric design, consistent with the architectural standards for public buildings of that era. One of the building’s most distinctive features is its large metal dome at the center of the construction, which serves as the landmark characteristic of the Pernambuco Assembly building.
The legislative chamber functioned in the Palácio Joaquim Nabuco from 1875 to 2017, making it a venue with nearly 150 years of continuous legislative history. The building represents an important piece of Brazilian institutional architecture and stands as a testament to 19th-century public building design in the Northeast region of Brazil.
