1963 Studebaker Avanti R1
Just in time for the storm. Be safe.
The fastest production car on Earth? Well kind of. From 1962 to 1963 the Avanti was Studebaker’s top dog, lets not mention that Studebaker would be going out of business in a couple years and pretend they had the whole world at their fingertips. Introduced was a sleek design by Loewy once again, it was a fiberglass body with a long hood, short rear deck and a sloped rear canopy. Making this a true 4 seater Gt coupe. The Avanti was placed on a modified Lark frame with a Hawk 289 v8 engine and options for a supercharger. It even was the first American car to offer disc brakes. When the production car was taken to Bonneville salt flats to test out it reached a 170 mph with the president of the company behind the wheel, and broke a total of 29 production car records. But the Avanti was short lived as tooling costs and production was too costly. Studebaker ended up selling to a third party, they changed the name to the Avanti II and ended up selling on a yearly basis well until the 90s for a much higher price.
