"Amsterdam School – Plan Zuid – Scheldestraat 23–37, built in 1928, architect A.J. Westerman (1884–1966)
In 1910, Westerman graduated from the Industrial School in Zwolle. He then worked for a year at G.A. Beltman’s architectural practice in Enschede.
Between 1914 and 1922, he was employed by the Public Works Department in Amsterdam. Thereafter, he mainly designed housing complexes – usually for private developers and rarely for housing associations – the majority of which are located in Amsterdam and The Hague.
Westerman’s public works from his time in the service of the municipality of Amsterdam were, as was customary at the Public Works Department in the 1910s, built in a style closely related to the Amsterdam School.
The Rivierenbuurt in Amsterdam-Zuid forms part of H.P. Berlage’s Plan Zuid. The Rivierenbuurt features many buildings in the Amsterdam School style."
