Description:
School Buses

Turn the cosmetic yellow school bus into a real school bus service: only enrolled students ride it, and a school’s routes are generated, and kept up to date, with a single click.

What it does

In vanilla Cities: Skylines the school bus is just a skin, so anyone boards it. This mod makes school bus lines actually carry students.

Students only. On a line you mark as a school line, only children and teenagers enrolled at that school may board. Adults, tourists and other schools’ students are turned away and find another route.

Like a real school run. Students board at any neighbourhood stop on the way to school, and only at the school itself on the way home.

One click per school. Click a school or high school and press Generate Routes. The mod reads the current student roster and lays out tidy bus routes covering where the students actually live, splitting a big school into several short routes (one bus each), just like a real district.

One click for the whole city. Prefer to do it all at once? Generate routes for every school in the city from the mod options (with a heads-up about how many lines and buses that means).

Routes that keep themselves current. Students grow up and families move. The mod watches each school’s coverage and automatically regenerates routes that have drifted out of date, so stops keep following the students. Don’t want that? Turn it off and manage lines by hand.

Sensible by default, tunable if you want. The defaults were tuned in-game for good coverage and ridership across school sizes (and work with custom modded schools of any size). Sliders let you trade coverage against bus count, change route length, and more, with a one-click ‘restore recommended defaults’.

Quick start: make a bus line students-only

This is the basic behaviour. Turn any existing bus line into a school line:

  1. Open the bus line’s info panel.
  2. Tick School line.

The mod finds the nearest school automatically and binds the line to it (that stop becomes the school stop). From then on, only that school’s students may board (anywhere on the way to school, only at the school on the way home); everyone else finds another route. Untick to make it a normal line again.

Note: this only changes who may board. It does not change the line’s vehicles or how many buses it runs, so set those yourself if you want. (The yellow one-bus-per-route school styling is applied to routes the mod generates for you, below.)

Quick start: auto-generate a school’s routes

  1. Subscribe to and enable this mod and Harmony, then load your city.
  2. Build a bus depot that can serve the area. Each route runs one bus, so a big school needs several; without a depot the routes are created but sit idle.
  3. Click an elementary school or high school. A panel opens on the side.
  4. Press Generate Routes. The mod reads the school’s students and creates one or more school bus routes covering where they live. Done.

Route the whole city at once: mod options, City-wide routes, Generate routes for all schools.

Tip: as your city grows and families move, routes regenerate themselves to keep coverage up. You can turn that off in the options.

Compatibility

  • Improved Public Transport Essentials: used (when present) to pin exactly one bus per route. Recommended.
  • Impatient Commuters: pairs cleanly; students waiting for their school bus won’t give up.
  • Designed to be non-destructive and to layer on top of vanilla; no known conflicts with other transit mods.
