Ermita de Monserrate – Matanzas, Cuba
Ermita de Monserrate was built in 1875 by a Catalan society in commemoration of the Virgin of Montserrat. This virgin was worshiped in a monastery located in the Mountain of the same name in the center of Catalonia, near Barcelona County. The members of the Catalan society in Matanzas decided to build the chapel at a hill, up the city, because the landscape reminded them very much of Montserrat in their land. The opening of the shrine took place in the winter of 1875. After being in ruin for years, the ermita was restored and invites to have a fantastic view over Matanzas.
