About the building

Constructed from 1906 to 1908, the Butler Brothers Warehouse was once of the largest warehouses in the country, and the largest west of Chicago (at the time). It is a takes up half of an entire city block, and measures over 100m lengthwise and over 50m width-wise. It is constructed in the Chicago style of architecture, and its tall skinny windows help the building look much taller that it is (although at around 45m it’s not small).

It uses post and beam construction from locally sourced Douglas Firs, because of that, the building is immensely strong, with and can withstand a load of upwards of 300 lbs per sqft. After the rail yards in Minneapolis started declining, it was difficult for trucks to deliver goods to the building and tenants started moving out. In 1971 it was added to the National Registry of Historic Places, and was vacant at the time. It was the fourth building in Minneapolis to be added.

An investor bought the building and converted it into offices (which is still its primary use today), and the building is known as Butler Square.
