Farmhouse 1 [MOREAS | GR]
The farmhouse of the Greek peasant has scarcely changed since when they first learnt to carve stone and wood thousands of years ago. The simplest of types is that of the one room or two room house where humans, animals and agricultural produce all share the same space. From that type came the two level house (anokatogo) with the animals and the produce on the ground floor (katoi) and the humans on the upper floor (anoi). The house on display here is a typical anokatogo with three rooms. Each room has a particular function. The mousafir onda is used only on special occasions and remains closed during the rest of the year. The mesia is a small storage room. And is where the family sleeps and eats. In front of the door is the hagiati, a covered or open porch made out of stone and/or concrete/wood where the family sits during the summer and where important agricultural activities are done. The ground floor – being unfit for human habitation – is usually divided into separate rooms for the agricultural produce and tools, and the animals. The stonework is undoubtedly the work of the famous (to us fans of tradition anyhow) craftsmen (mastoroi) from the village of Langadia in Arkadia.
Perhaps the house may be plain, but it has served for centuries the same basic needs and will undoubtedly continue to serve them until the end of time. It is these houses that make for the bulk of the housing stock in the Peloponnese even in our days and countless of people have been born, lived and died in them. If the goal of a house is foremost to provide shelter to humans and ensure their physical and mental comfort then this type has served it to the utmost degree. Can the same be said for much more "fancy" or "impressive" buildings of our modern age?
The textures for the facades are from a photograph taken in the village of Alonistaina in Arkadia. The rest come from textures.com.
