Description:

Hello everybody,

This is an improved version of my classic Bay of Plenty map. Previous versions include Bay of Plenty v1 and Bay of Plenty v2 (aka AMENDED). I couldn’t figure out how to update the workshop entry back when I uploaded these so thats why there are three different entries for basically the same map.

THE MAP

Bay of Plenty is a Cities: Skylines map based on heightmap data from Auckland, New Zealand which has been merged in GIMP with mountains and hills from the Owl’s The Golden Gate RM map by OWL. The map is suitable for 81 tiles play or for just using the center 25 tiles. It features high quality, handmade networks and interchanges. There are even some unique custom bridges. Most of the screenshots of the empty map are taken with vanilla LUTs and map themes.

No mods, assets, DLCs, or content creator packs are required to run this map.

I created the map for my own personal needs and I have used it for my Cities: Skylines magnum opus, Newport. It did become quite popular though and plenty others have since played on it. imperatur, BonBonB, and WillCS have all made videos featuring this map. Please note that most of the feedback in the BonBonB video has been accounted for in this and the previous version of the map.

WHY IS IT CALLED BAY OF PLENTY?

Because I didn’t know the name was that of a real place when I made and published the map. It was first some time later I learned of it due to news about the White Island volcano eruption. The name might have subcontiously been planted in my head while looking at satellite photos of New Zealand but it was never my intention to trigger ALL THE KIWIS.

CHANGELOG

v3 (published 23rd May 2020)

  • This version removes a few Mass Transit 2-lane highways. This should make the map 100% DLC free vanilla with empthasis on "should".

v2 (published 17th December 2019)

  • In this version I’ve fixed the waterflow in the bay so that it goes from the rivers and out into the ocean. Should now be more ideal for vanilla freshwater and sewage pumping. Don’t expect wonders in the mountains though. Since I want the rivers to feel small and realistic, they will sometimes have sporadic water flow. I like this feature. If you don’t you’ll have to fix it yourself.
  • I’ve also changed up the starting square roads to make for an even easier start. I’ve also reworked roads to be more compatible with vanilla road settings (i.e. no TMPE).
  • Furthermore, I’ve removed some hidden disasters DLC buildings that weren’t really causing any problems but weren’t really solving any either.
  • Some ship paths have been spaced out for more realistic, less ramming, boating.
  • Jagged edges near networks have been smoothed out. Some minor pixelation may still be seen in some places (in particular in the mountains) but this is such a pain to fix as they are not visible in the map editor so I’m not gonna bother. Once again it is you who will have to be your own hero if this grinds your gears.
  • Other than that I’ve fixed some minor glitching with the roads and the detailed bridges.

v1 (published 1st December 2019)
