Berlin-Reinickendorf. The "Weiße Stadt" is a large housing estate from the 1920s. It is attributed to the “Classical Modern” architectural style. Up until the beginning of the 20th century, Berlin was primarily characterized by dense development with dark inner courtyards. The “Weiße Stadt” should set a counterpoint here.
The settlement is characterized by a predominantly open building structure made up of perimeter and row buildings with green spaces in between. The white plaster of the building contrasts with colored accents on doors, windows and roof overhangs. The houses have been developed by different architects, so that there is a certain variety of details within the settlement.
On the Aroser Alle there are two roughly 160 m long, slightly curved buildings. The facade design is repeated every two house entrances. In order not to have to create two roughly 160 long, slightly curved buildings – especially one concave and one convex curved – I developed the so-called module. This enables a realistic simulation of the Aroser Allee. The cited facade designs at the house entrances and stairwells as well as the bay windows on the back of the building are concise.
My motivation for this set is based on a lack of classical modern buildings and a lack of row buildings from the 20th century in the workshop. I was also fascinated by the gate and bridge construction. Limited to four buildings and one module, parts of the “Weiße Stadt” in my city project have been recreated as realistically as possible.
The time required for this set should exceed 100 hours. At some point, with so many buildings, I lost track of the total effort. The night illuminations fall back on authentic tenant uses. Occasional assumed damage to facade elements and vandalism are original.
