Description:

Porto Santo is a small island near Madeira (Portugal). And it is a perfect fit for the Cities: Skylines map size.

Although most of the terrain is based on the actual island a lot of it is obviously just a fantasy. Especially the outside connection road is something indeed not present in the Atlantic Ocean, including the mostly flat island situated on the edge of the map this road is built on.

Vegetation and rocks are also not based on the real world. The island is actually much more drier most of the year and has much less dense forests. Hills are also not this smooth but much sharper yet that’s something almost impossible to replicate with the game.

Please note this map requires Mass transit DLC for the narrow 2 way highway.

Screenshots were taken with the Tropical LUT overwrite found in the vanilla game settings combined with Cleyra – Map Theme from the workshop, but you may be able find a combination more suitable for you.

Other than that, thanks to C:S now having more trees available (some of which look great) I feel like this map is ok even without any additional workshop content.

If you would like to go crazy with the vegetation, you can give a BOB, the Tree and Prop Replacer mod go as it can easily help you with that.

Outside connections suggestions/things to consider

Airport ✈️

I wanted to draw an airport runway where it belongs[www.openstreetmap.org]. But it is sadly not possible to be upgraded to the new runways in Airports DLC. So I decided against it. Also, the terrain is not completely flat in the airport area.

If you have the Airports DLC, the airport zone that you need to draw in order to build the runway is unfortunately flattening the terrain, but if you draw it carefully to not reach too much out of the planned runway, taxiway and the terminal building, you can then smooth the terrain around to make it a bit sloping again. When drawing a runway on slightly uneven terrain the end-result may get a bit closer to real-life examples πŸ™‚

I think it is visible on the image below the runway is rising slightly up towards the end.

Port βš“

The port/harbor is supposed to be situated near the island highway entrance. Ship path enters the harbor and terminal buildings are already placed inside as part of this map. And ships seem to fit in ok.

The actual Porto Santo island is very small. You would find one main village in there plus a few settlements around it, a few hotels and the airport. Not much else. Of course I was able to build an entire empire with all these universities, warehouses and industry buildings on it, but I doubt that would be sustainable in real life :).

There are dirt roads and a few highways pre-placed on the island. These are trying to follow the actual road placement on the island (not precisely). Many roads are missing though, it is just something to start with.

Have fun! πŸ™‚

This map has been majorly reworked in 2022 taking some of the BonBonB’s feedback into account. Thank you BonBonB!

Even so I enjoyed playing this map and have been playing it for a long time, but with a bit more variety to the trees and with more pleasant map theme and LUT to what BonBonB shows in the video. A glimpse of my large city can be found at the absolute end of the map gallery (no daylight picture though).
