Description:

Con Edison NY style Powerhouse by Basco81

What it is

This Powerhouse design is inspired by the IRT Power house, constructed in 1904, filling a block bounded by 58th Street, 59th Street, Eleventh Avenue, and Twelfth Avenue in Manhattan, New York.
This asset has the Renaissance Revival style but is NOT an exact copy due to triangle limits and high details of the real-world buildings.

The IRT Powerhouse is a former power station of the Interborough Rapid Transit Company (IRT). It was designed in the Renaissance Revival style by Stanford White.
The New York City Board of Transportation took over operation of the powerhouse when it acquired the IRT in 1940.
The building continued to supply power to the subway system until 1959, when Consolidated Edison repurposed the building as part of the New York City steam system.

Soon after buying the transit power plants, Con Edison launched a modernization program for them. The 59th Street plant was soon completely overhauled, becoming a plant for the New York City steam system. In 1960, Con Ed shut down the old low-pressure boilers and installed modern high-pressure boilers. In 1962, more high-pressure units were activated to replace the low-pressure boilers. This was followed in 1966 by the installation of two boilers and a turbo-generator, as well as the replacement of the western four chimneys with a single 500-foot (150 m) tall smokestack. By 1968, the plant was exclusively using oil and gas for fuel consumption.
Over time, the IRT Powerhouse has changed to meet evolving power needs, from its start as a generating plant for the subway, to its current use as a steam and electric production facility.

Today, the station has two high pressure boilers and three package boilers capable of producing up to 1,380,000 pounds per hour of steam for our customers.
These units currently burn a mixture of the predominant fuel, low sulfur oil, and natural gas. A conversion is currently underway to upgrade these units to burn natural gas exclusively or a combination of oil and gas.
The station also has a gas turbine capable of generating 20 MW of electricity.
