Description and history of the building:

Architect: Unknown
Address: District center in Royan, Charente-Maritime, France
Date of construction: 12th century
Program: Church

It is the oldest monument in the city. Its existence has been attested since the 11th century, even if the current building was only built at the end of the 12th century. The church was badly damaged following a fire during the Wars of Religion, and all that remains of the building is the apse, the transept and a single bay of the nave. The north arm of the transept, enlarged in the 14th century, has beautiful ribbed vaults. The bell tower, built on the southern arm of the transept, is established on an ossuary crypt.
The Saint-Pierre church has the particularity of presenting a flat chevet, quite unusual in Saintonge, lit by a triplet of bays. There is an example of a comparable bedside table, more or less contemporary, in Saint Martin de Fronsac, in Gironde.

Listed as a historic monument since 1928, the building suffered from the bombardments of January 5, 1945, losing part of its vaults.

A restoration campaign was carried out in the 1950s and made it possible to preserve most of the church.
