Tobidashi Boya (飛び出し坊や)
This asset was inspired by DutchCheese’s Slow Down Man prop.
A Tobidashi-boya ("Jumping-Out Boy") sign is a road safety sign to warn drivers of children potentially suddenly jumping out into the road. Japanese residential neighborhoods are often very dense and have a great number of blind spots and intersections. They are usually installed by request of PTAs and city councils, but some private citizens may install or even create Tobidashi-boya signs themselves.
Tobidashi-boya signs feature a number of different characters, such as this one made by ako_ako. Other designs feature girls or even elderly people. This particular design – the "series 0" by acclaimed illustrator Miura Jun – is arguably the most recognizable. The first signs were created by Hisada Kougei in 1973 at the behest of the Youkaichi (now Higashiomi) City Council. The character was named Tobidashi Tobita (飛出とび太) and got his own line of merchandise. He remains a common sight around Japan, especially Shiga Prefecture.
Being a product of the 70’s, older Tobidashi-boya signs are often weathered or in disrepair. Some may even take on a sinister appearance…

飛び出し坊やとは子供が道路に飛び出すの可能性があるために注意を促すの交通標識である。日本の住宅街は密集していることから死角や交差点が多いのである。PTAと市町村の要請で設置されることが多いけど個人で設置したり自ら作成する場合もある。
飛出し坊やには色々なキャラクターが生み出している。ako_akoさんが作成したものもその一つ。女の子やお年寄りのモチーフもある。その中でも、みうらじゅんによる「0系」は最も有名なデザインである。1973年に久田工芸が制作した。滋賀県八日市市社会福祉協議会（現・東近江市社会福祉協議会）の要請で作ったのが最初である。このキャラクターは「飛出とび太」(とびだし・とびた)と名付けられる。商品化もされた。現在も滋賀県を中心に日本各地でよく見かける。
70年代の産物であるので古い飛出し坊やは風化していたり荒れていたりすることが多いのである。中には怖い姿かもしれない…
